Oh’s internet buying tips

By Oh Pawlak

I have recently purchased my first laptop computer and have began my trek on the information superhighway; a.k.a. cyberspace. In addition to the vast, educational, and innovative concepts available to internet users, the world wide web also provides tremendous opportunity for bargain hunters. While shopping online, paintball consumers can purchase everything imaginable from goggles to guns. The prices and services provided for online shoppers can vary from superb to horrific. Here are a few tips to follow before making your first purchase via the internet:

1. Decide if you want to buy new or used. The cost of a new item will typically be a bit higher than a used item, but the new item usually carries a stronger warranty and factory support.

2. Shopping via the internet is easier than most people realize. Once you have decided to buy new or used, search for the paintball stores online (best for new purchases) and the classifieds (best for used items).

3. When you are researching the price of paintball equipment be sure to read the “fine” print. There are some super savings on the net, but they sometimes come with strings attached to them. If you are confused by the offer; contact the store in question and ask to speak to someone regarding their internet special.

4. When buying used equipment through the classifieds, you should never send money up front. Always ask for the items to be sent to you COD. This will allow you to check out the merchandise before paying for the item. Try to work out an agreement with your local store to accept the package in exchange for buying additional upgrades at their establishment.

5. Weigh heavily the advantages (mainly cost and sales tax savings) versus the disadvantages (warranty, shipping, and repair) of buying equipment via the internet. Sometimes your local store can provide the same cost (or close to it) and better repair services.

6. Never give out your social security number to any sales person. Expect online companies to ship (for credit card purchases) only to the billing address of the card holder.

7. Ask around (newsgroups, other on line stores, etc) about any questionable internet stores. Never buy from someone you can’t check on. You can also ask The Splatter Times for information regarding any recommendations.

Happy bargain hunting and remember to play safe & have fun.
